National Household Sample Survey - PNAD COVID19

National Household Sample Survey - PNAD COVID19

It aims to estimate the number of people with reported symptoms associated with flu syndrome and monitor the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Brazilian labor market. The collection of the National Household Sample Survey - PNAD COVID19 began on May 4, 2020, with interviews conducted by telephone in approximately 48 thousand households per week, totaling about 193 thousand households per month, throughout the National Territory. The sample is fixed, that is, the households interviewed in the first month of data collection will remain in the sample in subsequent months, until the end of the survey. The questionnaire is divided into two parts, one focused on health issues, specifically on symptoms associated with flu syndrome, and the other on work issues. In health issues, the occurrence of some of the main symptoms of COVID19 in the reference period of the survey is investigated, considering all residents of the household. For those who presented any symptoms, they are asked what measures were taken to relieve the symptoms; if they sought medical attention due to these symptoms; and the type of health facility sought. In work issues, the objective is to classify the working-age population into the following categories: employed, unemployed and people outside the labor force. The following aspects are also investigated: occupation and activity; leave of absence from work and the reason for the leave of absence; remote work; job search; reason for not having looked for work; weekly hours effectively and habitually worked; as well as the effective and habitual income from work. Finally, in order to compose household income, it is asked if any resident received other income not from work, such as: retirement, BPC-LOAS, Bolsa Família, any emergency aid related to COVID, unemployment insurance, rent and others. It is important to note that PNAD COVID19 is a survey with a dynamic instrument for collecting information; therefore, the questionnaire is subject to changes throughout the period of its application. The survey provides weekly releases for some indicators, at the Brazil level, and monthly releases for a wider set of indicators, by Federative Units. The results of PNAD COVID19 are pioneering in the sense of constituting the first release of Experimental Statistics elaborated by IBGE, which are aligned with the Institute's modernization strategy and allow the expansion of information offerings to meet the needs of its users.
